Angels On The Air

Ai2 Project Manager Hits the Radio to Support Troops

Whatever cause is close to your heart, it's rare that you're given a platform to broadcast about it.  Smaller charitable organizations usually don't receive much media attention.  Lauren Pomerantz, a project manager for Ai2, recently appeared on the Wayne Resnick show on KFI-AM 640 in California and brought attention to her little- known but important cause.  She thought she was just dropping by to watch Resnick do his weekly Sunday night show, but when the show's producer surprised her with an on-air appearance, Pomerantz shared her experience of nearly three decades supporting the United States armed forces.

Soldiers' Angels is a volunteer-led nonprofit that provides comfort to active duty military, veterans and their families.  Pomerantz has been with the organization since 2005, but her support of U.S. troops goes back to the mid-1980s.

A regular attendee of Resnick's live broadcasts from the Morongo Indian Casino, this time Pomerantz decided to bring along a soldier's wife she had befriended through the Soldiers' Angels program.  After the broadcast, Pomerantz and her guest Christina met the show's producers and host.  A mention on Resnick's program the following week and the fact that Pomerantz was Facebook friends with the Resnick team got her an invite to visit the show.

"I just thought I was going to watch a live radio broadcast and sit in the corner and be quiet," Pomerantz recalled.  "Then the producer comes over and says 'We want you to go on the air' and I found myself talking about random topics like the Space Shuttle and perfumes."  Pomerantz also got to speak about Soldiers' Angels for two segments on the program.  She described the experience as "fun, rewarding and unexpected."

Lauren Pomerantz has been supporting deployed service members since 1984 through the original Operation Dear Abby, Hugs to Kuwait, Operation Toasty Toes, and Operation Sandbox, but for the last seven years she has devoted her time and energy to Soldiers’ Angels, where she has watched it grow from an Internet community reading one woman’s blog about her son’s deployment to the largest military support organization in the country.

In 2005 she organized Project Thank You Notes to spread awareness, raise money, and collect cards to send in Soldiers’ Angels care packages.  She has been a Soldiers’ Angels mentor, a member of the Letter Writing Team, and has adopted over two dozen service members.  She is currently “angeling” a marine, a soldier and an airman in Afghanistan and a soldier in South Korea.

The Wayne Resnick program airs Sundays from 7-10 pm on KFI-AM 640 in Los Angeles.  For more information, visit KFIAM640.com.
